CULTIVATING BREATH AWARENESS is an entrance into a more subtle, less tangible, yet present aspect of asana practice. Son of BKS Iyengar, Prashant Iyengar has coined the term, Shvasayama. Shvasa is “breath”, Ayama is extension. Shvasayama practice is the gateway to Pranayama practice.
Iyengar Yoga students are encouraged to relax and relinquish any impulse to control and especially hold the breath. Without controlling the breath, breath will naturally follow the actions taking place in asanas. If a student of yoga develops a habit of breath control in asana prematurely it can hinder the release needed to align the intention of the mind with the action of the skeletal muscular body.
With dedicated time spent in the asanas, consciousness deepens, revealing the yoking of the psycho-physical. The practitioner begins to see how the actions of the going in, staying, and the coming out of the asana depend on different actions of breath. At this point in our practice breath awareness has arrived and it’s time to cultivate.
In this workshop we will explore breath movement in asanas that are familiar to an intermediate (Level 2 student). We will practice active and static poses. We will use props to stay longer in the static poses, giving us more space and time to explore the breath.
Carolyn Christie first encountered yoga during her service with the Peace Corp in 1987 in Thailand. Returning to the states Carolyn studied at the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco and began teacher training in New York with Mary Dunn. Carolyn joined the faculty in 1995 and has a Level 3 certification. She has studied extensively with Gabriella Giubilaro and Patricia Walden. In 1996 she made her first visit to Pune, India to study with the Iyengar family. Fast forward 31 years (yikes!) to 2026, Carolyn is a Senior Iyengar Yoga instructor, teaching in NYC and upstate New York. She and her husband bought a farm in Bovina, Delaware County. They have built a unique open-air yoga pavilion and welcome yoga students to come for yoga weekends and weekly classes.
